| The sun shines on IKEA |
|
2008-08-14 11:00:22 Ingvar Kamprad, CEO of Ikea, wants to sell the world’s best and cheapest sun panels. That is the goal of the investment company Ikea Greentech which will be searching the environmental technology business for interesting products. Ikea has earmarked 50 million euro for investments in environmental technology for a few years ahead. The money will be distributed through Ikea Greentech, an affiliate of Ikea, and is to be invested within the areas of sun panels, alternative lighting, energy saving, water saving and new product materials. Ikea Greentech will merely be an investment company at the initiation stage, and the general idea is that the company through new environmental technology will develop products to put in the Ikea self service warehouses. The company is currently negotiating with several companies regarding collaboration, and the goal is to during the first stage invest in ten companies. Ikea has the great advantage of distribution possibilities; the company can easily take a product and quickly make it available in large quantities in the 270 stores all over the world – something that will hopefully be happening in three to four years. The CEO of Greentech, Johan Stenebo, hopes that Ikea one day will be selling the world’s best and cheapest sun panels for people to put on their rooftops. He’s convinced that the environmental trend will last for a long period of time, and however this is a strongly growing business, he can’t think of there yet being any current competition to this business idea of mass-produced, cheap environmental technology. |
