Wind energy installations booming in the U.S.
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) released its report on the newly installed capacity in the U.S. during Q3 2009 yesterday. According to the report 1 649 MW were installed during the quarter which is higher than in Q2 2009 and Q3 2008 and brings the total capacity installed in the US to 5 800 MW in 2009 YTD.

2009 was predicted to be a very weak year for wind power, thanks to the economic meltdown and credit crunch. Thanks to the stimulus package, the market has instead developed very strongly. Since early July, when details of the stimulus package was presented, has 1 600 MW been added to the market, enough to supply 480 000 households, and a further 1 700 MW is under construction. The biggest winners of the sharp expansion are General Electric, Siemens and Vestas.

The total wind power capacity in the U.S. now stands at over 31 000 MW, enough to supply nine million households or equivalent to 10 nuclear power plants, and helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 2.5%.
