Volvo launches fuel saving hybrid bus
2008-10-29  15:15:17

A press release from Volvo announces that Volvo Buses launched the hybrid bus Volvo 7700 Hybrid a few weeks ago. It is attractive from an economical point of view since the hybrid components are developed by Volvo and because the fuel savings will be as high as 30 percent. Several European bus companies have taken interest in the hybrid bus; e.g., the biggest travel- and transportation company of Luxemburg, Sales-Lentz, has ordered six hybrid buses. A topic being discussed is how the public transportation can contribute to the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.

Jos Sales, one of the Sales-Lentz partners, means that a way to contribute is to drive buses with a lower fuel consumption, leading to lower emissions. One of the primary reasons to the choice of Volvo hybrid buses is the economical advantage: The high fuel savings results in a lower cost per kilometre in spite of a high purchase price. Sales-Lentz are expecting their first bus to be delivered in the fall of 2009, and the following five during 2010.

Volvo has also developed a parallel hybrid, where a small diesel engine and an electrical engine are used separately or together. The bus charges brake energy in batteries and uses that energy to run the electrical engine. By the bus stops the diesel engine is turned off, and upon leaving, the bus does so without any exhaust gases and almost soundless. When the bus reaches a speed of 15-20 km/h, the diesel engine restarts.
