Electric cars Down Under

2008-10-24       16:40:28

Shai Agassi, CEO of the American company Better Place, is going to build a network of charging stations for electric cars in the biggest cities of Australia. One of the investors is the finance company Macquarie Capital which is contributing with about US$ 630 000 000. The goal is to within four years have between 200 000 and 250 000 stations. The stations will primarily be placed in residential areas close to companies, car parkings and malls.

In addition to that, there will be places where people can quickly change their discharged battery for a new one: If one is driving far and doesn’t want to have to stop every once in a while to charge the the batteries, there will be a 150 stations available by the cities and along the most important highways, where one can change them.  As much as possible of the electricity of the charging stations will be produced bye renewable energy sources, as the purpose of building an infra structure for electric cars is to decrease the emission of climate affecting gases in Australia. Electric cars might be produced by Renault-Nissan and General Motors.
