China taps water for "grim" Beijing
2008-09-19 14:37:32

China's capital started pumping "emergency" water from its long-parched neighbouring province on Thursday. Officials, according to Reuters, are speaking of a "grim" shortfall weeks after the Olympics when they said the city had enough water. Hebei, which surrounds Beijing, willpump 300 million cubic metres of water to the capital (with 16 million inhabitants) from three dams which usually supply nearby farms, towns and cities. Hebei ranks near the bottom of China's 31 provinces and province-status cities in water resources per head, with on eighth of the national average, according to official numbers.
